I particularly enjoyed the large assortment of fresh baked breads, including the white chocolate bread that Club Med is famous for. The children stick with others their own age, making it easier to make new friends and find activities that match their interests. The Club dates to the late 1980s, when it moved into the premises formerly occupied by the Sandpiper Bay Resort Hotel. That explains why the accommodations are much larger than is typical of Club Med. You're on the brackish water of the St. Lucie River at this property, but the water is warm , so jump in! But when I checked prices for the summer, I was excited to see that a three-night, all-inclusive stay for my family of three would set us back just over $1,500. While not inexpensive by any stretch, we'd enjoy all of our food, drinks and activities on property — including a kids' club. And that rate booked us right into a superior family room, with a separate area with bunk beds for our daughter. Service style is a bit Hi-De-Hi but the sports are all expertly organised. As the sun goes down, Club Med heats up again with tennis exhibitions, trapeze shows inside its auditorium or outside, and all-night parties in the Slice Bar & Lounge. The staff that served guests fruit poolside and ran the fitness classes will likely be there, too, dancing and mingling with the vacationers.
Because of reckless spending, the Club was on the verge of bankruptcy in 1961. It was saved by the 35-year-old Baron Edmond de Rothschild after he had visited a resort and enjoyed his stay. With Rothschild financing, the number of villages increased greatly under Trigano's leadership from 1963 to 1993. Winter villages, providing skiing and winter sports tuition, were introduced in 1956 at Leysin, Switzerland. In 1965, the first club outside the Mediterranean was opened in Tahiti.
Club Med broadened its reach by opening villages in the Caribbean and Florida where English rather than French was the main language. Its secluded 120-acre location is also ideal for the get-away-from-it-all crowd. The GOs work double duty at night, getting clad in costumes and stepping onto the stage to perform in very entertaining musicals, comedy shows, and more. And while programming is always kid friendly, you can expect some jokes and innuendos that keep adults having fun and rapt with attention, too.
Nightly in the main theater, and from there the action rolls right on over Slice Bar, where a DJ spins music and the GOs lead dance steps for an all-ages crowd. The bar usually stays open until 2 a.m., even if the kids head back to their rooms earlier. We stayed here 2 nights so we could check this place out for a family vacation. Plenty of closet space with hooks and nooks for clothes. But when the air conditioning was on, it sounded like a train was coming through. There was a master switch and other switches that controlled other lights and I never figured it out.
On property, there are Hobie Cats, SUP and kayak rentals for forays out into the river . The three onsite pools range from an adults-only pool to a splash pad for your youngest ones. A $25-million renovation, completed in Dec. 2010, elevated the stature of Sandpiper Bay.
Beyond the physical improvements -- most noticeably remodeled guest rooms and a new infinity pool at river's edge -- the resort completely revamped its sports programming. The 337-room Sandpiper Bay is the flagship of Club Med "Premium Sports" resorts, offering world-class training in golf, tennis and fitness. It is also the chain's only all-inclusive family resort in America. GOs are moved between villages and many work both winter and summer seasons. Photo by Nick Ewen/The Points GuyThe second night we ventured on a four-minute walk to Meat Market. While not part of Flavor Palm Beach, it does offer daily happy hour specials from 4–8 p.m. The full restaurant wasn't exactly a COVID-safe environment, but we scored a quiet table in the bar area — spaced well away from other diners — and enjoyed another spectacular meal. We really enjoyed our dinner for two with a view each night. One of the restaurant staff was nice enough to take this photo for us, and I have to mention that during our entire stay the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.
